Living Wisely in a Smart World

Matthew 7:24-27  (NIV) “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

With all the technological advancements humanity has achieved and the countless “smart gadgets” available, people should be smarter than ever before. Sadly this is not the case. Conversely, our “smart technology” reveals humanity’s sheer corruptness. Otherwise how does one explain the current acts of ISIS (so called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq) and the manner in which such heinous acts are executed? It’s needless to say that many of the ISIS devotees are college graduates and actually sophisticated in the way they promote their propaganda and barbaric acts. No doubt, these people are smart—at least in what they are doing. But they lack wisdom. The word of God closely associates wisdom with the fear of God. The reverential fear of God causes us to obey His commands. The wise person is one who appropriately applies the Word of God in all situations.

The ISIS case is certainly an extreme one but the question of wisdom is applicable even to those who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is not enough to say that one loves the Lord Jesus Christ. True wisdom is demonstrated by how we live out our faith in the world out there. Men and women of wisdom are those who are not only eager to listen to the Word of God but are also enthusiastic in practicing it.
