Ephesians 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation (NKJV)
How can we summarize the real meaning of life? What is good life all about?
I summarize the definition of life in one word: Relationships. Life is all about our vertical relationship with God and our horizontal relationship with people. Jesus summarized the whole Old Testament in commandment: Love God and love people. What do you think is easier to do; loving God or loving people?
I find loving people more difficult than loving God. This is so because many of my friends are sometimes annoying, even the people I love so much. I love my wife so much and also my children. But many times they do things that do not please me. This is can be so difficult. When I have a miscommunication between me and my wife I don’t want to say “I am sorry.” I feel it is always their fault and I am the “good guy”; and when this happens a wall starts building up. What was a warm fellowship begins to get cold, we can no longer smile, or even talk to each other, we can no longer pray together. Our house becomes so cold and boring because I do not want to say, “I am sorry.”
Such walls exist today in our relationships, even in the church, or our small groups. In Bible times, there were such divisions and hostilities in the church among the Jewish believers and the Gentile believers. We too can easily fall into the same temptation of thinking that we are better than others maybe because of our social statuses like education, family background, spirituality, or culture. It is easy to despise others because they are different from us. When we compare ourselves with others we start competing and struggling, and as a result walls of hostility begin building up. Whenever there are wall of hostility in a family or church, the fellowship gets cold and we cannot experience the love of God.
Why are we able to love one another? Why are we able to call people who are different from us our brothers and sisters? It is because of Jesus Christ. The Bible has told us that “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.”
Think of one person whom you find it so difficult to love or accept. Why is this so? May be they hurt you. But because of Jesus Christ, that wall which stands between you and that person can be broken; if you allow Jesus to do it even right now. Do not be a slave to anger and unforgiveness, let the peace of God flow through you as you forgive and accept those people you had rejected in your life. Jesus Christ is a wall-breaker!
